How much would you be able to pay to see? How much is the daily view of your own playful children, parents and family worth? What would you give for the chance to look at the world again? What would you give … if you had nothing?
We write to you. Yes, for you. To the person who is reading this. Because it depends on you whether people who have been afflicted with the worst plagues of the world for years – from drought, hunger to corrupt warlords, for whom “to have” means much more than “to be” will be able to see. Why “to see” and not to “live”, “learn”, “eat”? Simply: sight is our basic sense. It allows us to function and communicate in the most full way. It allows us to enjoy what we have. Even if we do not have anything. Like people from Ethiopia, whom I help with my friends. I go to help a few times a year. I help them regain their sight. Some of them, having learned about our action, walked 150 km on foot, and waited for over a week at the hospital door. Nearly 40% of Ethiopians suffer from chronic trachoma.
We have been helping since 2007. At that time, in Lalibella and Alem Katema, we carried out over 1000 eye surgery – on trachoma and cataracts; we brought to Ethiopia 100 kg of materials needed to perform eye surgery: thousands of operating masks, serviettes and surgical gloves. We have let hundreds of Ethiopians see the world and their families again. And that they could take matters into their own hands – work, grow, raise. Today we want to offer you to join us.
Why are we doing this? Because we feel that they need us. Us, Poles. We’ve been here before. In the years of the Great Famine in Africa, between 1985 and 1987, the Polish squadron of humanitarian aid was stationed in Alem Katema. We chose this place by accident – there is a hospital that is necessary for the operation. After 25 years we come again. In other times and with other help. The smile of patients who see again is our biggest reward.
How do we finance operations? Alone, thanks to people of good will. Like you. We are looking for companies that are able to donate the necessary medicines and materials needed for surgery. We also take Polish doctors who are already on site performing surgery. We organize everything on the spot – we rent a hospital and equipment. During one day we are able to carry out about 30-40 operations. Each expense is 150 US dollars.
What will you have with the support of the action? Satisfaction and gratitude of people who changed your life. Find sensitive people – just like you – who feel what we are most surely the greatest happiness on Earth.
